Article copy

Australian temporary fencing should be purchased as a complete, documented system rather than as an isolated mesh panel. The buyer must define the site, layout, panel configuration, bases, clamps, bracing, gates and any screening, then request evidence that applies to the quoted arrangement.

MaiFa Fence publishes a 2.1 m x 2.4 m Australian-style welded panel together with base, clamp and stay options. Its older product content refers to AS 4687-2007, but Standards Australia now lists the 2022 series. A current project specification should identify the edition and parts required by the principal contractor, authority or project documents.

Important boundary: this checklist is a procurement framework, not legal or engineering approval. The project team must identify the applicable requirement and verify that the evidence matches the exact panel, base, clamp, brace, gate and screening configuration.

1. Identify the current project requirement

Standards Australia publishes AS 4687.1:2022 for general requirements and AS 4687.2:2022 for temporary fencing and temporary pedestrian barriers. Do not accept the phrase 'Australian standard' without an edition, part and evidence scope. Record any project-specific drawings, authority conditions, public-interface rules and severe-weather procedures alongside the standard reference.

Requirement area

What the buyer should record

Why it matters

Standard

Required edition and parts, plus project or authority clauses

Prevents reliance on a superseded or generic reference.

Site

Address, exposure, terrain, ground condition and public interface

Supports the stability and access-control proposal.

Layout

Fence length, ends, corners, returns, slopes, gates and openings

Controls quantities and local support details.

Screening

Shade cloth, printed mesh, signs and their coverage

These additions can change wind action.

Evidence

Report number, issuer, date, configuration and limitations

Connects the claim to the purchased system.

2. Translate the requirement into a product schedule

MaiFa's current Australian temporary fence pages publish a common 2100 x 2400 mm panel, 32 mm outside-diameter frame tube with 1.0, 1.2 or 2.0 mm wall options, 3 or 4 mm wire and 60 x 150 mm mesh. These are options. The quotation must select one value for each variable and state dimensional tolerances, coating route and the approved drawing.

The same pages publish two concrete-filled base configurations: 600 x 220 x 150 mm at 25 kg and 560 x 245 x 130 mm at 32 kg. They also describe 4 mm thick steel clamps. A base mass or clamp thickness alone does not establish site suitability, but both must be visible in the bill of materials so the offered system can be checked against the required evidence.

3. Provide stability inputs before accepting a brace layout

  • Provide wind region or other wind-design information required by the project.
  • Describe open, coastal, elevated or sheltered exposure and any nearby buildings.
  • Identify ground slope, soft ground, hardstand, excavation edges and permitted anchors.
  • Show gates, line ends, corners, returns and changes in direction.
  • State whether shade cloth, signs or printed mesh will be installed.
  • Require inspection after installation, alteration and severe weather.

MaiFa's website shows two different stay bills of materials: one table lists one brace, two bases and two clamps, while another description refers to three clamps and three plastic feet per stay. The safe purchasing response is to name the selected stay drawing and exact component count in the quotation, not to publish either arrangement as universally correct.

4. Use the SafeWork NSW checklist as an operational cross-check

SafeWork NSW advises that site fencing should be complete, have minimal gaps, use secured gates, have panels securely clamped and be configured with appropriate counterweights, baseplates, brackets or braces so it does not collapse in high winds or on uneven ground. It also advises against tie wire or cable ties for joining posts. These operational points belong in site inspection and handover documents as well as procurement.

5. Documents to request with the quotation

Document

Minimum content

Approved drawing

Panel, base, clamp, stay, gate and screening arrangement with revisions.

Bill of materials

Part numbers, descriptions, quantities, spares and included fasteners.

Evidence schedule

Applicable standard/part, report or assessment and configuration match.

Inspection plan

Dimensions, welds, coating, assembly checks and acceptance records.

Packing list

Panel, base, clamp and brace quantities by package, with weights and dimensions.

Commercial schedule

Unit prices, Incoterm, named place, lead time, payment, validity and warranty scope.

6. Copy-and-send RFQ

Please quote a complete Australian temporary fencing system for [project address]. Required standard/parts: [insert project requirement]. Fence line: [m], with [corners/returns], [pedestrian gates] and [vehicle gates]. Proposed panel: 2100 x 2400 mm; please state frame OD/wall, wire, mesh, coating and tolerances. Itemise the selected bases, panel clamps, brace clamps, stays, fasteners and spares. Site exposure is [description], ground is [description], and screening/signage is [yes/no and coverage]. Provide the approved configuration drawing, applicable report/assessment, inspection plan, packing schedule and [Incoterm] price to [named place].

Frequently asked questions

Is AS 4687-2007 the current edition?

Standards Australia publishes a 2022 series. Confirm the edition and parts required by the current project.

Does a product-page standard claim cover every custom system?

No. Check that the evidence covers the quoted panel, base, clamps, bracing, gates and installation conditions.

Can a fixed brace interval be used everywhere?

No universal interval should be assumed without layout, wind/exposure, ground, gates and screening inputs.

What should be inspected on site?

Completeness, gaps, gate security, clamps, baseplates, braces, ground condition, screening and changes after severe weather.

Request a traceable MaiFa system quotation

MaiFa can prepare a panel-and-accessory quotation after the project team supplies the required standard reference, site inputs and layout. The best deliverable is a configuration drawing tied to an itemised bill of materials and evidence schedule.
