A request for '2x1x1 welded gabions' is incomplete because it does not define whether the dimensions are in metres, whether the stated size is outside or nominal, how many internal cells are required, or which wire, mesh, coating and connection method should be supplied. These omissions can produce quotations that look comparable but describe different products.

1. What MaiFa currently publishes

2. Define the basket and cell geometry

For a 2 m or 3 m long box, identify whether the basket is divided into equal cells and show each diaphragm position. State lid arrangement, base panel, end panels and whether adjacent baskets share connections. Define acceptable squareness and dimensional tolerance before production.

3. Specify wire and mesh without ambiguity

State wire diameter in millimetres and clarify whether it refers to the metallic core, the wire after metallic coating or the finished PVC-coated diameter. Define clear mesh opening, orientation, weld pattern, edge wire if different, and any higher-diameter reinforcing edges. A supplier range should not be copied into the purchase order; select one value.

4. Separate coating layers

A phrase such as 'galvanized PVC gabion' can hide several possible constructions. The RFQ should identify steel wire, metallic coating type, polymer coating type, nominal coating thickness or finished wire diameter, colour and test evidence. Also define how cut ends, weld areas and transport damage are handled.

5. List every connector and stiffener

Welded gabions may use spirals, clips, tie wire, lacing wire or other connection methods. Face bracing or internal ties may be needed to manage shape during filling. Require the quotation to list the installed quantity and spare quantity for each part, along with material and finish.

6. Coordinate filling and wall design

The basket supplier cannot determine wall stability from box size alone. The responsible project team should define foundation, wall height and batter, drainage, filtration, stone properties, stacking, course connections and any geotechnical design requirement. The product drawing should be reviewed against that design.

7. Price and pack by a defined unit

Define whether one set includes base, sides, ends, lid, diaphragms and all connectors. Request the flat-pack package dimensions and weight for each size. Use separate SKUs for 2 x 1 x 1 m and 3 x 1 x 1 m so bundles, connector cartons and replenishment orders cannot be mixed.

Buyer control checklist

A useful procurement file separates the supplier's published range from the exact configuration being ordered. The following controls should be completed before price comparison or purchase-order release.

• Create separate SKUs and drawings for the 2 m and 3 m basket lengths.
• State outside dimensions, tolerance, cell count and diaphragm positions.
• Select one wire, mesh and coating specification rather than a catalogue range.
• Define one complete set and list all connectors, stiffeners and spares.

• Measure representative panels and one assembled basket for each SKU.
• Check mesh opening, wire diameter, weld condition, edges and coating continuity.
• Count diaphragms, lids, spirals/clips/lacing and spare parts by package.
• Confirm flat packs are protected from deformation and moisture during transport.
• Record nonconformities and agreed repairs before shipment release.

How to compare supplier offers on one basis

Build a bid-comparison sheet before reviewing price. Give every offer the same rows for product geometry, materials, coating or finish, posts and connections, gates or accessories, drawings, samples, inspection, packing, quantity per commercial unit, package weights and delivery terms. Mark each response as included, excluded, optional or not stated. Where a supplier proposes an alternative, record the changed value and its effect on interfaces instead of treating it as equivalent automatically.

Commercial comparison should use the same Incoterm and named place, currency, quantity, package scope and document requirement. Separate factory price from freight, local tax, installation and project engineering. This method does not select the lowest quotation by default; it exposes omissions and gives the buyer a clear list of technical questions before sample approval or purchase-order release.
